1 Open the tool

From Free Tools, open Project Charter Generator (or go to charter-tool/). The wizard starts a new draft in your browser. If you return later on the same device, a localStorage draft may still be there so you can continue.

2 Fill steps 1–5

Work through the guided steps in order. Typical sections cover project identity and context, problem and objectives, scope boundaries, stakeholders and governance, then success measures, risks, and related initiation details. Use plain language a sponsor can defend in a hallway conversation. Skip fluff; keep exclusions and owners clear.

Move forward when a step is good enough. You can usually go back to refine earlier answers before you export.

3 Review the live preview

Watch the live preview as you fill fields. Treat it as the document your sponsor will see, not a private worksheet. Check names, dates, scope edges, and success metrics for accuracy before you download.

4 Download Word or PDF

When the preview looks solid, download Word (.docx) if you need further editing or a signature workflow, or PDF for email and steering packs. Keep a copy outside the browser so clearing site data does not erase your only version.

5 Start over when you need a clean slate

Use start over (or clear draft, if labeled that way in the tool) when you begin a different engagement. Export first if the previous charter still matters. A new draft should not silently replace a file you only kept in the browser.

Tips

  • Drafts for this free web edition live in browser localStorage on this device. Always export Word or PDF for archive or handoff.
  • Weak problem statements and fuzzy “in scope” lists often produce weak charters. Spend time on those steps.
  • After approval, track delivery in the free Project Tool. Map process changes in Process Map Studio when the charter depends on a new or fixed flow.

Security & privacy

Charter content stays in this browser until you export. Nothing is uploaded to Aruvi servers for storage. Treat exported Word and PDF files as confidential client material. See Free Tools for the full note.
